Wort Hogs Club Competition Rules

1. We will use the 20-point scale (P. 379 in Papazian) for scoring and the BJCP Style Guide (opens in a new window) for establishing judging criteria/style appropriateness. All sub-styles within a style category will be acceptable and judged according to the relevant sub-style guidelines.
2. Each member will complete a score sheet by her/himself for each beer (or for half the beers if there are too many entries and/or judges). We will discuss the pros and cons of each beer after the tasting/judging, and before moving on to the next beer. Judges are encouraged to be constructive in their comments, noting strengths as well as weaknesses and offering helpful suggestions.
3. Brewers should bring at least four 12-oz. bottles/48 oz. of beer to meeting. Bringing beer tapped from a keg in a growler or other suitable container will be acceptable. The brewer is responsible for proper carbonation.
4. Rule Four, now this term, I don't want to catch anybody not drinking.
5. The scores from the individual score sheets will be averaged after removing the single highest and lowest scores. The highest average score wins. Scores will be averaged to the nearest tenth of a point. In the event of a tie, the three highest ranked judges present will break the tie after additional tasting of the tied beers.
6. Scoring, for determination of Brewer of the Year, will be as follows: 1st=10 pts, 2nd=7 pts, 3rd=4 pts, all other style entries=2 pts, non-style entries=1 point. At co-brewing competitions, each co-brewer will get half of the points awarded (5, 3.5, 2, 1).
   Only the top 6 months' points for each brewer will count toward Brewer of the Year. Brewers can, and are encouraged to, enter as many of the competitions as possible, but only their top 6 showings will count for BOTY.
7. Calibration will begin at 7:45 PM or so on the day of the competition and judging will start at 8:00 PM, in accordance with the wishes of the club president. Brewers are encouraged to come at or before 7:30 to get their beers registered. They are discouraged from observing the registrar's activity, since non-standard containers will be permitted and the anonymity of the brewers could be compromised.
8. The top three Brewers of Year (Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary Fermenters) will get awards at year's end.
